Coach Missy Meharg's concept is based on setting the field hockey field up as a grid. This is done for three reasons; for teaching, statistics and ball patterns. Coach Meharg divides the field into four areas: the attack quarter of the field, attacking middie quarter, defensive middie quarter and the defensive quarter. From there the field is divided vertically into zones 1, 2 and 3, with 3 being the outside areas. The same concept goes for the area around the goal for goalkeepers. To aid visual learners, Meharg uses a Subbuteo board to divide the field visually and to show each of the steps in detail. The eight steps begin with defense in the attacking quarter, followed by defense in the midfield and into the circle. Step 4 deals with defensive penalty corners. Step 5 and 6 focus on attack out of the defensive quarter and attacking in the midfield. The final two steps are the attack into the circle and attacking penalty corners. Each step is carefully broken down and analyzed by Meharg. Finally, the use of actual game video shared in this excellent instructional DVD allows you to see game applications of this strategic 8-step plan.
